Available in 4 configurations—cup, stem, grip-neck, and plate styles—these wheels suit chairs, tables, and case pieces across eras. Material options include brass, nickel, rubber, porcelain, and wood. Each is finished to complement vintage or contemporary interiors. Brass remains the preferred choice for period restoration work, offered in polished or antiqued finishes. Built for durability and engineered to match original hardware proportions, these casters appeal to restoration specialists, cabinetmakers, and designers seeking reliable, visually cohesive solutions that balance form and function without compromise. Brass claw feet and toe caps were also used on antique furniture with curved legs. Antique Furniture Casters are Reliable, Well-made, Eye-catching
FAQ
There are 4 main types of antique casters which each have their own unique install requirements:
- Stem-type Casters are ideal for furniture legs with a narrow profile. They attach with a round steel shaft with coarse threads. Installation involves screwing this threaded shaft directly into a hole in the furniture leg, with no additional fasteners required.
- Plate-Type Casters have a circular mounting plate, combined with a robust stem, to create a strong link between the furniture leg and the caster. The plate is fastened to the underside of the leg with wood screws, while the stem stabilizes the caster to prevent wobbling.
- Grip-Neck Stem Casters feature a uniquely shaped stem designed to fit into a metal socket sleeve. This sleeve inserts into a hole in the furniture leg. Once in place, the sleeve firmly grips the stem’s neck, ensuring the caster stays securely attached. This design offers a cost-effective way to add mobility to wooden furniture and comparable pieces.
- Cup Casters have an attached leg-cup. The leg-cup portion encases the furniture leg holding the caster securely in place. This style can be challenging to fit on some older furniture as there are limited cup sizes available. However once installed this design is aesthetically beautiful.
Yes, it is important that the caster, claw foot or what ever you are attaching fits securely. If replacing hardware on existing furniture consider that multiple sizes and shapes have been made over the years, however most are not made today as only a limited number of styles and sizes are currently in production.
Be sure to compare the provided size measurements to the actual size of the furniture leg. If these measurements differ, the furniture leg will need to be modified if using the replacement hardware.
Casters enhance furniture functionality and aesthetics in multiple ways. They enable effortless repositioning, allowing chairs to glide smoothly beneath tables and facilitating quick room reconfiguration of furniture. The modest height elevation they provide proves particularly valuable for low tables, improving accessibility and usability. Beyond practical benefits, quality casters contribute distinctive character and visual refinement to pieces, transforming utilitarian furniture into styled elements that reflect thoughtful design choices.
