Jewelry Box Lock

If replacing an old lock, BACKSET SIZE is critical, as keyhole in lock and furniture must line up together.

  • Backset- Distance To Pin: 1/2", 13 mm
  • Overall Width: 1-1/2"
  • Overall Height: 3/4"
  • Selvedge: 1/4" x 1-1/2"

Additional Jewelry Lock:

Many vintage lock sizes are no longer made. As a result it may not be possible to exactly match an old lock.

  • Key length: 1-1/4"
  • Key-bit Height: 1/8"

  • Insert Escutcheon: #0241 can be used with this lock

Half mortise lock is for lift lids. Use on small boxes. When installed, this lock fits into a partial cut out in box interior. Strike attaches underneath surface of lid. When lid is closed, strike drops down into lock. Key turns one lever mechanism to secure lid. Once installed, lock is hidden from exterior view. Made in England.

Install Considerations

  • Install this half mortise lock into a partial cut out on box interior. In closed position, lock is not seen.
  • Strike attaches underneath surface of lid.
  • If you have original lock: measure distance between top edge of lock to lock pin in center of keyhole. This measurement is known as the backset.
  • If old lock not available, determine backset by measuring: distance from center of keyhole (where lock pin will be) to top edge of box.
  • The backset measurement of the replacement lock, must match backset measurement in original lock and/or keyhole location measurement in drawer or cabinet door.

Installation os great locks made easier.

Great locks for the jewelry boxes I am making. I did sacrifice one lock-plate from the eight I recently purchased to make its installation easier. I soldered three short screws into the holes of the latch plate then put the latch plate on the lock that was mounted on the jewelry box. I closed the lid and gave it a light tap, thus marking the location of the holes that would be drilled to attach the lock plate. I bet the manufacturer could make and furnish this modification which sure makes the accurate installation of the latch plate easier.

Good hardware, great support

First time buying this sort of thing, so I had a bit of learning to do. The responses with help were timely and valuable! I'd buy from Paxton again!

Jewelry Case Lock and Key

Years ago, I built several of of the jewelry cases featured in Woodsmith No. 46 (August 1986). It was a most satisfying project, so recently I decided I needed to build another. However, the original supplier referenced in the plans, no longer carried the locking hardware. But then searching the web, I found Paxton Hardware had a very similar product which filled the bill. Perfect size, great quality and competitive price, so the project is nearing completion. Thanks for a great product!
