Half Mortise Box Lock Measurement Diagram

Finding an exact match for an old lock is not always possible, as only a limited amount of sizes are now  made.

Brass Box Locks are heavy duty. They are a half mortise style for large chests with lift lids. Excellent quality. Use on large tool boxes and blanket chests. They are made to be practical and durable.  These hard working box locks provide reliable protection for your valuables.

These are half mortise type locks for lift lid furniture. They are beautifully made with a brass face plate, box and bolt. Each lock has a 2 lever locking mechanism for smooth action, dependable service and a high level of security. When installing lock must be mortised into wood. Lock strike is attached underneath lid. When closing lid curved prongs of strike drop down into lock selvedge. Once installed the lock plate will create a smooth continuous surface on the interior of chest. Only keyhole displays on exterior of chest.  Use keyhole cover to decoratively trim front of chest.  Made in England.

The backset measurement is necessary if selecting a replacement lock:
    • If you have original lock: measure distance between top edge of lock to lock pin in center of keyhole. This measurement is known as the backset.
    • If original lock is not available, determine backset by measuring: distance from center of keyhole (where lock pin will be) to top edge of box.
    • The replacement lock's backset measurement must match location of keyhole in furniture.

Found a chest lock that fit

After alot of searching, I found a chest lock that fit my blanket chest. Yes, the new lock body was rectangular, so I changed the half mortise from trapezoidal to rectangular. Most importantly the key hole distance to chest's edge was selectable and correctly chosen. The new lock had to be adjusted slightly to better fit the vintage footprint, but all in all a great match.

    Perfect Replacement

I bought this lock as a replacement for a restoration of my grandfather's old wooden tool chest. It was an easy installation, looks good, and works perfectly. This is an excellent product that I would highly recommend.

I was frustrated not being able to find what I thought should be a readily available lock for the tool chest I made. I discovered the Paxton site after 2 wrong choices and too much search time. The lock was perfect. The perfect size; made in England, not china and priced well.
