Half Mortise Box Lock Measurement Diagram

Japanned Lift Lid Locks are sized for blanket chests, tool boxes and large boxes. This style box lock is often seen on antique 19th century furniture. These Japanned Chest Locks are made of steel. They offer a traditional appearance. Each has a historic black japanned-iron finish. This finish was developed in late 17th century Europe to imitate Asian lacquer work. Strike is brass. Made In England

These box locks are a half mortise style. Each lock has a 2 lever locking mechanism for smooth action, dependable service and a high level of security. When installing lock must be mortised into wood. Lock strike is attached underneath lid. When closing lid curved prongs of strike drop down into lock selvedge. Once installed the lock plate will create a smooth continuous surface on the interior of chest. Only keyhole displays on exterior of chest.  Use keyhole cover to decoratively trim front of chest. Made in England.

Replacing Box Locks

Keyhole location measurement is critical. Replacement lock-keyhole-location must match location of keyhole in furniture.

To measure: easiest to measure old lock, if you have it:

  • Lock Keyhole Location: distance between selvedge-edge - where bolt shoots through, to lock pin. This measurement is known as the backset.
  • Furniture Keyhole Cutout Location: distance between furniture-edge to estimated location of lock pin in furniture keyhole.
