Antique Replacement Bolts for Wood Bed Frames

6" Steel Bed Bolts commonly seen on antique rope beds, securely connect side rails to head/foot boards. Tendon end of side-rail slips into mortise-cut in bed-post. Once in place, bed bolt draws wood bed-post and side-rail tightly together producing a strong rigid joint. These steel bolts with nut are strong. They have a standard 3/8"- 16 thread. However, some vintage beds have odd thread sizes, if different, nut in side-rail will need to be replaced.

Steel Bed Bolts

  • Length: 6"
  • Length less Head: 5-3/8"
  • Bolt Thread: 3/8"- 16
  • Square Head: 3/8" x 3/8"
  • Flange Diameter: 15/16"
  • Head Depth: 5/8" Depth
  • Square Nut:  3/4"x 3/4"
  • matching 7" Bolts
How to measure bed bold

For more help please see: replacing bolt and nut on a vintage bed.

How to Measure

  • Overall Length includes head and flange
  • Length less head & flange: 5-3/8"
  • Measure depth of Head- channel. must-be deep enough to contain 5/8" head including flange.
  • Measure channel less Head-channel: must-be long enough to accommodate bolt length less head & flange.
  • Historically thread-size of old/antique nuts varied. Our bolts screw into a 3/8"- 16 nut,3/8 refers to bolt diameter, 16 refers to the number of threads per inch. If your bed has existing nuts It will be necessary to determine nut thread size. Nuts must be replaced if size is different than 3/8"- 16.
Install bed bolts
Installing Bed Bolts

To secure bedpost to rail, insert bolt through bed-post into bed-rail. Tighten with a bed bolt wrench.

Use a decorative bed bolt cover to conceal head of bolt. Today these beds are adapted with spring supports to hold modern spring and mattresses.

If the mattress needs to be lowered: attach spring supports to inside of rails. The spring supports will hold modern spring and mattresses.

Lost the original bolts. Needed to replace nuts. Need the correct tools.

Perfect fit for Suter’s twin beds.

Bolts lost in move.
Because these beds are hand made, we had difficulty finding replacements.
When I googled bolts for antique beds, Paxton Hardware appeared.
Perfect fit and excellent customer service.
Thanks

Great resource!

I have an antique bed that I lost the bolts to in my recent move. The originals were hand- forged; after an hour at the hardware store, we couldn't find one with the right spacing on the screw part. My friend googled bed bolts & found this site. Although the bolts aren't an exact match, they worked!

We can now sleep in our beds again. Lost the original bolts. Lucky to find Paxton with replacements.
