Half Mortise Box Locks
Economical Box Locks, with half mortise design, are used on chests and boxes with lift lids. Lock is mortised into interior of box front and strike attaches underneath lid. When closed, strike drops down into lock.

Finding an exact match for an old lock is not always possible, as only a limited amount of sizes are now made.

This full mortise lock is steel with a steel strike. It is very reasonably priced, as such: locking mechanism is average, not as smooth as finer made in European countries, yet is serviceable. Made in Asia.
If replacing a lock: the backset measurement must be determined
- If you have original lock: measure distance between top edge of lock to lock pin in center of keyhole. This measurement is known as the backset.
- If old lock not available, determine backset by measuring: distance from center of keyhole (where lock pin will be) to top edge of drawer or side edge of door.
- The backset measurement of the replacement lock, must match backset measurement in original lock and/or keyhole location measurement in drawer or cabinet door.
