    More Japanned Door Locks:

This Japanned Door Lock  is a versatile antique design for use on cupboards, cabinets, and other furniture. It installs on the interior surface of the door frame. It is easily applied to both right and left hand doors without the need for mortising. The historic design is authentic, yet also complements contemporary and rustic styles.

These Japanned Door Locks are made of steel. Each has a historic black japanned-iron finish. This finish was developed in late 17th century Europe to imitate Asian lacquer work. The mechanism has a tumbler action. Lock-bolt is brass plated. Strike is not included, as is not required. Made In England.

    Choosing Surface Locks

For help measuring and selecting surface locks, we recommend reading: How to select, measure and install surface locks.

    If replacing a lock:

    • If you have old lock: measure distance between selvedge-edge (edge where bolt shoots through lock) to lock pin in center of keyhole. This measurement is known as the backset.
    • If original lock is not available, determine backset by measuring: distance from center of keyhole to edge of cabinet door.
    • The replacement lock's backset measurement must match location of keyhole in furniture.

When you need Historically Corrrect Furniture & Door Hardware

Paxton has the best brass hardware which is historically accurate for replacement work that I have found. This is a great place hiding on the Internet. And even has a showroom at the warehouse!

japanned iron cabinet lock, 13/16 to pin

It works like a dream. Everything aligns perfectly with the lock it replaces... even where the bolt engages the old strike plate. I am grateful for Paxton's assistance with getting the dimensions right, and for cautioning me against buying the lock I originally wanted to buy (which wouldn't have worked as well). Many thanks for such concern and professionalism.
